History of Girls High School, Atlanta, Georgia

In 1869, Alderman D. C. O'Keefe of Atlanta City Council, requested that the Mayor, two Councilmen and seven citizens investigate the need for Public Schools in Atlanta. As a result, Girls' High School in Atlanta oepened its doors on Ivy Street on 30 January 1873. The old Oglethorpe Building was leased and became the permanent home. The first graduating class has 11 students.

In 1890, the Boys' School building was annexed and made part of Girls' High School.
