The quiet little village of Fairmount, having some 300 residents,was located at the base of the Ramsaur mountains in Gordon County. Fairmount College first opened its doors to students in 1895, and its second annual commencement occurring on May 29, 1896, which boasted only seven graduates: Arthur Ramsaur, Miss Metta Dodd and Miss Ada Findley of Fairmount; John P. Clower of Brooks County; Miss Maud Erwin of Erwin; and Misses Bammie and Lillie Fuller of Calhoun. President Sharp required them to memorize their essays....the judges awarded two books to Miss Metta Dodd and Mr. Arthur Ramsaur as being the first and second best.
