Andrew Female College was founded in 1854, opening its doors in Cuthbert, Georgia with a four-year curriculem. The college was named in honor of bishop James O. Andrew, one of the founders of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
Its programs were suspended during the War Between the States interrupted, a period of three years, when it was used by the Confederacy as Hodd Hospital. When the school re-opened in 1866, a course for physical training was added.
When the buildings burned in 1892, the people of Cuthbert rallied to raise the funds necessary to raise a new building. In 1917, it became a two-year college, and did not become coeducational until 1956.
